Understanding the Causes and Problems Involved with Sagging Eyelids.
The body is held together by tissues and so-called "ground substances" (let's make this analogous to "glue"). The basic two tissues are collagen and elastic fibers. With the passage of time the elastic fibers lose their elasticity (stretching with ability to return to the original position). This results in what we call aging and sagging skin. One of the most pronounced areas to have this occur is on the upper eyelids.
With the passage of time the involved skin on the upper eyelids loses its resiliency (ability to spring back) and the eyelids slowly and imperceptibly begin to sag. This causes several things to happen without the person even being aware of what is developing.
As the eyelids continue to sag, they come to rest on the upper eyelashes. This causes more work to be done by the muscles such that "tired eyes" result. A fold of the tissue develops and causes a crease over the outer aspect of the eyes. This sets the stage for tears from the eye surface to follow in these folds and cause continued moisture and discomfort. Too often this is misread as allergy and/or infection. Medications are given with little or no benefit.
As the upper eyelid sagging continues to worsen, a condition called "hooding" begins to develop. This now is the actual physical obstruction of view-ability. Decrease of peripheral viewing can become a hazard to one's safety. We have had patients who had to actually raise their eyelids on waking in the morning to be able to see. We have had a patient who had to tape his upper eyelids up in order to be able to read. These were readily and quickly corrected in our office.
Upper eyelid blepharoplasty is done in a short procedure in the operating suite in our office. It is done under local anesthesia with the patient awake. The patient is able to leave under his or her own ambulation. There is some swelling and bruising effect for a few days. The above described problems are gone.
