The Process
After years of research it was found that certain wavelengths produce specific results as a matter of attraction of the wavelength to certain colors. The Alexandrite laser ray has been found to be attracted to the color, black. This makes it a good ray to treat the hair roots that are black. Ideally, the best situation is black hair on very fair skin (the black hair, thereby, absorbing most of the rays). This is the most popular type of laser in use today for laser hair removal, and the Food and Drug Administration has, now, declared that the use of the Alexandrite laser, which we have in our office, causes permanent hair reduction in its use for laser hair removal.
However, it has little or no effect on gray and blond hairs.
More recently, it has become known that a longer wavelength with "pulse" application can, also, be attracted to and remove hair. This ray has the additional attraction in that it can be used on darker skins and, to a limited extent, on some lighter hair colors. Accordingly, we, now, have two accepted lasers for removal of hair. Other lasers are also available for this treatment; This laser office has both of the lasers described above. Success with the Alexandrite has been very good. Due to the way hair grows, it is important to treat during the active (anagen) phase. This will be some 50 to 70 percent of the hairs at that time. The intermediate (catagen) phase and resting (telogen) phase are not affected until they will have completed their cycle back to the anagen phase. At that time a second treatment is done to treat those now in the growth (anagen) phase. Accordingly, several treatments (usually three or four) are needed to bring about a marked reduction in residual hairs.
This office has an Alexandrite laser in house at all times. We have, also, procured a second laser with the longer wave length. This is called the Lyra laser. It has worked VERY EFFECTIVELY on dark and very dark skin (types 4,5,& 6 - these being darker pigmented skin) where the dark hairs are affected without "bleaching out" the skin color in the process. It has added a great dimension in treating the hair problem for these people.
The use of lasers for hair removal is a process of several years vintage. This office has years of experience with the procedure. Our results have been good and gratifying.
