The first of these was monoxidil (a high blood pressure medication that gave the side reaction of increased scalp hair). That observation lead to the research of application of the medication topically to the scalp in various strengths to determine the best percentage for usage. After much time it was determined that 3 % was acceptable in females and 5 % in males. At first the product was marketed as a prescription. It is now available over the counter. Effectiveness of this has been fairly good with twice-a-day application. This must be continued indefinitely.
The second product to be found in a similar manner is Propecia. This was first marketed as Proscar for treatment of prostate hyperplasia in men. It was presented in a 5 milligram tablet. It was also noted that it caused scalp hair to grow. Accordingly, the company set out in research to see what strength was needed for stimulating scalp hair growth in men. The result was the presentation of the drug, Propecia, which, apparently, works by blocking an enzyme that causes baldness. The Food and Drug Administration has, also, approved this for public use. It is by prescription only. This medication is to be, strictly, used by men only and is packaged such that women and children cannot easily come in contact with the tablets (and they should not). Results with this medication have been very gratifying.
